Three Popular Tourist Sites to SKIP in Florence, Italy (and what to do instead)
We've all seen them - lists of the “Top X Things to Do in [Insert City]." But are those lists always reliable, or do they consist of what most people elect to do, rather than what's worth doing?
Below, I'm sharing three popular tourist sites found on every “what to do in Florence” list that I think you can skip, along with suggestions of what to do instead.
THE UFFIZI
Don’t get me wrong - the Uffizi is one of the most important art museums in the world, especially when it comes to Renaissance art. But even for me - someone who has a degree in art history and who absolutely loves art - it can be a lot. It’s big, it’s crowded, and it’s often a frustrating experience, jostling to get a closer look at something through the crowds. So if you’re not in a patient mood and super into art (or specifically Renaissance art for that matter), I give you permission to skip it.
What to do instead: Head over to The Accademia, a smaller museum that’s much more manageable, where you’ll get to see one of the world’s greatest works of art - Michelangelo’s David.
THE DUOMO (MAIN CATHEDRAL OF FLORENCE)
Going into the duomo is soooo tempting. Its gorgeous pink, green, and white marble facade beckons anyone who travels to this beautiful city. The long lines outside the front give the impression that its interior is just as stunning as its exterior.
Well, I hate to tell you this, but it’s not. By comparison, the interior is fairly dull (with the exception of its dome, which is lovely but difficult to see from the ground floor). It’s a disappointing and underwhelming experience.
What to do instead: Go to Santa Croce, and be amazed at the artistry lining almost every surface. As a bonus, you’ll also get to see the tombs of important historical figures such as Michelangelo, Rossini, Dante, and Galileo, as well as historical artifacts, like a portion of St. Francis of Assisi’s robe.
PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO
I will hand it to this famous piazza’s panoramic view of Florence - it is stunning! But the piazza itself can also be over-crowded, particularly at sunset, when everyone is trying to get the perfect, iconic photo.
What to do instead: Go to Bardini Gardens, where you’ll find a similarly gorgeous view overlooking the city, with far fewer crowds. As a bonus you’ll get to spend time in one of the city’s most beautiful green spaces.
