6 Essential Items I Won't Travel Without

Noise cancelling headphones

Being able to shut out surrounding noise is a must for me on long-haul flights. Ever since getting a pair of noise cancelling headphones, my flights have been much more pleasant, and I've been able to get more sleep. I use Bose Quietcomfort headphones, and though they are without a doubt pricey, they are 100% worth the investment.

A reuseable bag

You never know when you're going to need a bit of extra room to carry your belongings. A reuseable bag that can roll up to into a small package has always come in handy when I’ve least expected it, for everything from carrying groceries back to the AirBnb, to using it as a backup when my suitcase was too full. I’ve been using my Loqi bags for years and they’ve held up well, but I also like Baggu bags for a wider range of styles and, for a backpack style, Solgaard’s Daypack.

An E-reader

I'm a mood reader, meaning that I read several books at once, and switch between them according to how I'm feeling at any given moment. And while I love physical books, there's nothing like being able to carry several books with me while I travel. Having an e-reader has changed my reading life in ways that I never imagined!

Sherpani bags

I've made no secret of how much I love Sherpani bags. For me, they sit at the perfect intersection of practicality, style, and price. I also like the subtlety of their anti-theft systems. I use their Indie AT backpack as my personal item on the plane, and it transitions perfectly into a daily carry bag when I arrive at my destination.

Tripit app

Tripit scans your emails for travel related reservations and builds your itinerary within the app. It'll even pull confirmation numbers, contact information, and it will track changes to your flights. This app has freed up so much brain space for me. Now I can focus on the planning part of my trip, and not worry about managing all of the small details, knowing that all of the information is being collected in one, easy to navigate place.

Wise card

It was during my trip to Italy this past Spring that I first used a Wise card, and I'm never traveling without it from this point forward. Load up your Wise card with USD, and then convert it into one of over 200 currencies, at some of the lowest exchange rates available. Then use your card like you would a regular debit card at your destination. It's a game-changing, simple way to access cash and pay for things, just about anywhere in the world. (Full disclosure: the link above is a referral link).
