Here's the Scoop on Europe's New Travel Requirement

You may have heard the news - American passport holders will soon need a “visa” to travel to 30 European countries, known as the Schengen countries.  Though this requirement may seem like it's coming out of the blue, it's actually been in the works for awhile. COVID and other delays pushed the project back, but now the European Travel Information and Authorization (ETIAS) program is confirmed to begin in 2024.

One misconception is that this is a visa program, which is untrue. It's often been reported as such, but it's actually a travel authorization and US citizens are still able to travel as tourists in these countries without an obtaining a visa. And while the differentiation between visa and travel authorization may seem a bit a like splitting hairs, the process to apply for the authorization is actually straightforward, simple and (thankfully!) affordable. Here's how it works.

Prior to your trip, you'll need to visit the ETIAS website to fill out an online application. The fee is around $8.00, and once approved, your travel authorization is good for three years or when your passport expires, whichever comes first. Length of stay for tourists from the US remains the same - up to 90 days within a 180 day period.

Most people will have their application processed in minutes, though in certain cases it may take longer, so you should apply well in advance of your planned travel dates. Authorities are quick to remind applicants that receipt of the authorization does NOT guarantee entry into Europe. Border guards will have the final say and will make the final determination that you meet all requirements for entry.

If you're planning to travel with Roam & Gather next year (are you Team Portugal, or Team Italy?), getting this paperwork in order before we travel together is something to be aware of. Keep in mind though, every Roamer who signs up for a trip has access to a private planning hub, which has information like this (and lots more) to help your trip go as smoothly as possible!
