How to Choose the Right Clothing For Travel

Black clothing hangs on a series of hangers

If you’re a newsletter subscriber (and if you’re not, you can sign up here to get more tips like this every month!) you know that I’m a bit obsessed about packing. I’m constantly on the search for the most efficient, comfortable, and useful kit I can build, including clothing. It’s essential to strike a balance between style and comfort in your travel clothing. Selecting the right outfits can make your travel experience more enjoyable and hassle-free.

I usually use a 4-3-2-1 method when packing: 4 tops, 3 bottom, 2 shoes, and one layer-able piece. All of the pieces are neutrals that can be mixed and matched, then I use accessories to bring color and more of my personal style into the outfits. This formula works well for me, and I’m happy to tell you that it’s absolutely possible to pack light, be comfortable, and still look stylish! Here are some things to keep in mind while purchasing travel clothing, and considering what to pack.

  1. Prioritize Comfort:

    • Opt for breathable and lightweight fabrics, such as merino wool, linen, or moisture-wicking materials, to keep you comfortable in various weather conditions.

  2. Versatile Wardrobe Essentials:

    • Build your travel wardrobe around versatile pieces like neutral-colored tops and bottoms that can be mixed and matched, creating multiple outfits with fewer items.

  3. Dress in Layers:

    • Choose clothing that can be layered to adapt to changing temperatures, allowing you to stay comfortable throughout your journey.

  4. Consider Cultural Sensitivity:

    • Research and respect the cultural norms of your destination, ensuring that your clothing choices are appropriate and respectful in whatever place you’ll be traveling.

  5. Packing Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics:

    • Opt for wrinkle-resistant clothing to maintain a polished appearance without the need for constant ironing or steaming.

  6. Footwear Selection:

    • Invest in comfortable walking shoes that provide support for exploring. I usually stick to two pairs - one that serves as my “main” pair for exploring during the day, and a second pair of dressier shoes that work well for a night out.

  7. Sun Protection:

    • If you’re going someplace where you’ll spend a lot of time in the sun, don't forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin from the sun's rays.

  8. Functional Accessories:

    • Bring a crossbody bag for convenience and safety, and a lightweight scarf to add a touch of style while keeping warm on cooler evenings.

  9. Mix in Bold Colors and Prints:

    • Add pops of color or unique prints to your wardrobe to express your personal style and make your outfits stand out.

  10. Practical Outerwear:

    • Pack a versatile and packable jacket or coat suitable for the expected weather conditions at your destination.

  11. Research Your Destination:

    • Tailor your clothing choices to the specific activities and climate of your travel destination. It's crucial to be prepared for every scenario.

  12. Test Your Outfits:

    • Before your trip, try on your outfits to ensure they're comfortable and suitable for a full day of activities.

Remember, your travel wardrobe is for you and you only! So, the key to making it successful is finding a balance between practicality and your own personal style. It may take awhile to zero in on what works for you, but you’ll realize the results are worth the time and effort when you have a minimal and beautiful travel wardrobe that’s curated just to your taste!
